Our mural-based service projects are a great way for your group to engage in the community while getting a rich educational experience. See below for the range of activities all centered around the deep tradition of mural painting here in San Diego. These events can accommodate varied ages and groups of many sizes. Fill out the contact form below for more information.
San Diego is home to a thriving art community and mural art is an important expression of community identity from San Ysidro to Oceanside! However, many of the murals in and around San Diego are aging and in need of restoration. This is important since communities with public art experience less incidents of graffiti, tagging and other types of destructive acts upon community property. So Via has teamed up with local artists in support of community revitalization through mural restoration, creation and education for the benefit of all community members.
Via International can create three distinct mural-based activities for your group to choose from:
- Take a tour of the Chicano Park murals. Chicano Park is the largest outdoor mural park in the nation and is filled with almost 100 distinct murals depicting Chicano identity and indigenous and Mexican history. This activity includes a workshop on how to read these famous murals led by local mural experts.
- Restore an existing mural. Hundreds of murals are in place throughout San Diego county and many are in need of restoration and beautification. This activity includes a lesson in art restoration and working side-by-side with the original mural artist to give an existing mural some much needed vibrancy.
- Design and create a brand new community mural. Many schools and private building owners would love to have a mural to beautify their space. Your group can work with one of our contracted mural artists to design and install a brand new mural to add to our city’s vibrant landscape.
