For almost a decade now, Via International has been proud to serve as fiscal sponsor to the The Border Church / La Iglesia Fronteriza, a non-sectarian Christian community dedicated to following Jesus and seeking the reign of God by breaking bread along and across the San Diego/Tijuana border.
Since November, 2011, people from both the United States and Mexico have gathered each Sunday afternoon to share communion at Friendship Park, the historic border meeting place at the western edge of the border, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This Sunday gathering is also known as “EL FARO,” because on the Mexican side of the wall people gather in the shadow of Tijuana’s landmark lighthouse, a reminder that God’s grace shines indiscriminately on all.
On a typical Sunday, the Border Church welcomes migrants and deportees, tourists and passers-by who pray together and share communion on both sides of the border. Afterward a meal is served by the Border Church team in Mexico with the hungry always served first. Midweek leaders from the Mexico team serve the migrant people of God in Tijuana through a variety of programs and ministries
